How a Jet Pump Works


A jet pump stays above ground, typically in a basement, well house, or utility area, and uses suction to draw water up from the well through a pipe. Jet pumps come in two main configurations: shallow-well jet pumps, suited for wells around 25 feet or less, and deep-well (or two-line) jet pumps, which can handle greater depths using a second pipe to improve suction efficiency, though still with real limitations compared to a submersible system.

Because jet pumps rely on suction from above ground, there is a practical limit to how deep they can effectively draw water, and performance drops off as depth increases. A submersible pump runs silently, since it operates underwater and out of sight, but servicing or replacing it requires pulling the entire unit up out of the well, which is a more involved job when repairs are needed.


Maintenance Considerations


Jet pumps tend to have a shorter lifespan than submersible pumps, partly due to their above-ground exposure to temperature swings and partly due to the mechanical wear involved in maintaining suction. Submersible pumps, protected inside the well and running in a more stable environment, typically last longer between replacements, although the labor involved in replacing one is more significant than swapping a jet pump.
